Well, we’ve all heard of Prince Charming and lordy knows where mine is. But I recently discovered a competition that is held in Nantwich (sp?), England annually. It’s an Earthworm Charming competition. It’s true. All these people come out to compete on square plots of ground with various odd contraptions to try to convince the earthworms to come out of the ground. Winner, of course, is the one with the most worms in 30 minutes.
Check out the video. It’s like a cross between Halloween and earthstomping/rattling.
I poked around on the internet a bit more and it appears that earthworms have evolved a survival mechanism of emerging from the soil when a certain vibrational pitch is experienced in the ground. The same vibrational pitch as a…. MOLE. One of their key predators.
Fishermen.. take note.
Note: this poking around learning about Earthworms is for an article that I did for Jan issue of the “The Order of the Earth” – a monthly environmental newsmagazine. http://www.theorderoftheearth.com/
