[from my friend, Marney Bruce, again.. thx to Marney!]
Hi everyone. Happy new moon! Is it really about to be June?!! The Summer Solstice arrives on the 21st this year – 5:45AM. EDT, to be exact. And the summer flowers are beginning to bloom. The butterfly milkweed in my yard is in big bud but behind last year. [Marney lives in the Wash DC area.]
Have you had any local strawberries yet? I have! It was a small sweet native strawberry* from my front yard, but I hardly ever get any before the critters. The full moon in June is called the Strawberry Moon. This name was universal to every Algonquin tribe. Because the relatively short season for harvesting strawberries comes each year during the month of June, this full Moon was christened for the strawberry. Some also know it as the Rose Moon, which is pretty appropriate since roses are blooming wherever you look.
The full moon is on the 7th next month, so we’ll be at the new moon again during the Solstice. Let’s hope for clear night skies ahead so we can see the crescent moon growing.
Best wishes to you all for all your new beginnings this month.
*Fragaria virginiana – a terrific, but aggressive, groundcover. It was covered with white flowers just a little while ago and is happy in sun or part shade.
