So I opened up my email this morning to discover an invite to a boutique coffee company here in Baltimore. It’s called Zeke’s Roastery and they generally have mighty fine coffee.
So Zeke’s is having a special event this weekend on 1/10/10. (Rather odd looking date.) Here is the announcement that I received:
“Good to the Last Drop
This year marks the “turd” annual Kopi Luwak tasting at Zeke’s Roastery in Lauraville. $10 gets you a 10-ounce cup of the special coffee, made from beans eaten and digested by the Asian Palm Civet, a cat-sized mammal.”
So, of course I need to find out more. And there is more to be found. Turns out that in Indonesia there is a small mammal, as mentioned above that eats the raw coffee berries. Then the poop with the berries is harvested and sorted through and beans are dried and pounded to remove the outer coating, and sorted. And then you’re ready to roast them like any other coffee bean.
I have walked many a trail outside and seen bear poop (in AK), fox poop, deer pellets and so on. But never have I thought that animal poop could be converted into an extremely expensive luxury drink. Surely this obsession with coffee and caffeine has gone too far?
Well, maybe not if you’re a coffee aficionado. So for those interested, head on down to Zeke’s on the 10th. Have a sip for me. I don’t think I’ll be there.
But I gotta love Baltimore for hosting this kind of event. You go, Zeke!
