Everything – Poem by Mary Oliver

by Mary Oliver

I want to make poems that say right out, plainly,
what I mean, that don’t go looking for the
laces of elaboration, puffed sleeves. I want to
keep close and use often words like
heavy, heart, joy, soon, and to cherish
the question mark and her bold sister

the dash. I want to write with quiet hands. I
want to write while crossing the fields that are
fresh with daisies and everlasting and the
ordinary grass. I want to make poems while thinking of
the bread of heaven and the
cup of astonishment; let them be

songs in which nothing is neglected,
not a hope, not a promise. I want to make poems
that look into the earth and the heavens
and see the unseeable. I want them to honor
both the heart of faith, and the light of the world;
the gladness that says, without any words, everything.

One Response to Everything – Poem by Mary Oliver

  1. When I posted this poem, I meant to thank the woman who posted it on her blog, that allowed me to just copy and paste it here. I thanked her at her blog though and then received this email the following day. For anyone interested in listening to some beautiful podcasts of poetry, you can join Nicole:

    Hello Mare,

Thanks so much for your comment over at my blog! I’m so glad you enjoyed the Mary Oliver poem (“Everything”). Mary Oliver has become such an amazing inspiration to me, and I’m so glad to share her profound work with anyone who stumbles across my blog.

Since you’re interested in poetry—I’m not sure if you saw that I’ve been doing weekly poetry podcasts. I read a poem via podcast every Friday and post it on my blog. I’ve done a couple of Mary Oliver poems so far, as well as other favorites like E.E. Cummings, Roethke, and Tony Hoagland. The list keeps growing. You can check them out by clicking here http://bluebicicletta.wordpress.com/tag/podcast/ , if you’re interested.

    Have a wonderful creative day!
