Two weekends ago, I was visiting an intentional community in Virginia near Charlottesville. While there I gave a copy of my book, “If I gave you God’s phone number….Searching for Spirituality in America” to one of the residents, an ex-monk who has lived there for almost 30 years. A wonderfully kind gem of a man.
He read the book in a week and then posted this message/review to the whole community to share some of his reflections and let them know that I had given him an extra book to leave out for other community members in their mailroom.
I always love to hear people’s responses to the book. ;~)
In her book, she interviews young people, Seniors & even a person on Death Row to get their responses to her question, “If I gave you God’s phone number, what would you do with it?” Implicit in this book, is for you to answer this question for yourself, (& get maybe a little insight about yourself).
Honestly, if I’d seen this book in Books-a-Million, I would have passed it by, but Mare gave me a copy, I did read it & these are my observations.
First, she is brutally honest sharing herself with you. Her sister has just had a 2nd baby, Mare didn’t, at the time of writing, have a serious relationship. (She has experienced the ending of relationships all too often.) She is a “recovering Catholic”, (I’m just an ex-).
The book is an easy, fast read. I enjoyed it. It is worth looking at.
Some of the statements from the people she interviewed:
…why is the #1 grossing business, weaponry?
…why is so much of our lives ruled by $?
…why did you bother creating this world if there is so much evil in it?
…clothes hide our sexual responses.
…to be human is to be judgemental, about ourself & others.
…beliefs like “life after death” are all junk.
…if a Muslim kills a Muslim, his punishment is hellfire beyond a shadow of a doubt. (Between 450 to 700 Muslims died on 9-11.)
…self-righteousness is the root of fanaticism.
…to be God loving is to be Earth loving.
…Morning Prayer to God, “Thank you that I’m sucking air another day”.
…my own phone call would be, “God, after human death, what?….precisely what?”
For Mare the Environment is important to her. She likes to read. She is into alternative Health & Gardening. She has a Master’s Degree in Natural Resources. She searches…
I took her to my “Church”… 1/2 way uphill from 4 corners, got out & walked around. I whipped out my phone & noted, “4 bars, good service”. She stood for awhile & meditated. I stood with her quietly.
