T’was the Day after Christmas … Earth Mother’s Perspective

[Along the theme of the last post, but with a slightly more serious environmental tone… I penned this in 2003. Enjoy! ;~)   Ps. For those you might want to read more from Earth Mother’s perspective, you can always check out my award-winning book, Messages from Mother…. Earth Mother.]

T’was the Day After…

T’was the day after Christmas

and all through the land,

mother earth was convulsing…

what about this man?!

The gift giving was over –

the trash all bagged up,

boxes, liners, wrapping tossed,

the festivities all mopped up.

Many a Christmas tree still stood

all covered with shine,

the ornaments would be collected

with dead wood left behind.

And off to the landfill

the trash and trees do go

to create a Mt. Everest

of waste, unsightly show.

But who is giving to the earth,

thanks for her gifts?

who is thanking the Mother

appreciating her thrift?

For she is the giver

of paper and wood,

thanks to her great prowess

all we have is good.

Wrapping paper, cardboard

and great volumes of word

were printed industriously

with trees that once were.

And the plastics and glass

mined and dug from so deep,

are the children of her tissue,

so gauged! Does she weep?

For we have forgotten

in all the holiday joy,

who has given birth to so much

beyond a young boy.

With every gift unwrapped,

every toast of cheer –

let’s recycle that paper

and remember the Mother here.

To honor La Tierra,

the earth and her splendor,

all the bounty we’ve collected,

it’s time now to mend her.

So let’s buy some live trees

for next year’s fest,

ones that we’ll plant outside,

and invite the birds to nest.

Perhaps we could shop less,

and instead give more of joy

to celebrate the birth

of that amazing boy.

Mother Earth could be top on our list

of those we wish to bless,

we could make a special effort

instead of creating another mess.

So next holiday time,

stop for a moment and think,

is this good for the earth?

if it is, do it! Don’t hesitate a wink! ;~)
