The thing I would like you to know about your tears is this. I know you feel awful, and the pain, the loss, seem to feel like endless emptiness. But the tears. These are a promise of sorts, the pledge of a conspiracy of Spirit to be with you in the journey. I knew a wise old woman who once spoke of tears as the way God watered your inner garden, the promise that Spirit was at hand, here to be an ally, here to meet you as a friend and support. If you can meet these tears as a friend now, as an ally in deep pain and grief, you can celebrate them as welcome guests in moments of joy as well, and will find them coming to you in the most unusual moments of your life. If you can remember that they are signs that Spirit holds and carries you, washes and renews you, you won’t have to fight them so valiantly. You will be able to surrender to their gentle floods, and be at home in the skin of your own suffering. If you can do this, I suspect you can do anything. Bless you.
