Rescuing Petunias – Poem by Mare


Rescued Petunias

i rescued petunias this afternoon.
instead of captive girls in Nigeria.
wearing the t-shirt my sister gave me
at Christmas,
which says Nigerian Nativity.
i asked the hispanic landscapers to give me
those petunias tossed into the black bag
so they can still live
as wounded as they were tossed
aside, no care,
i rescued them and planted
them with prayers for safe flowers
and healing.
i prayed in the
