Paul Goodman – Nine Kinds of Silence Plus Some Additions

Yesterday on Facebook I posted the following:

Love the sound of the train in the distance.
Then Stillness.

It is all good…

Thank you, Great Mother, Great Father, Spirit…

This morning, a friend posted this message and link on my home page on FB:

“best post Ive ever seen on Facebook!”

Paul Goodman on the Nine Kinds of Silence

“There is the dumb silence of slumber or apathy… the fertile silence of awareness, pasturing the soul… the silence of peaceful accord with other persons or communion with the cosmos.”

More at:

Thank you, Brainpickings and Maria Popova… I celebrate and aspire to become adept at experiencing each of these types of silence. Though I would add a 10th Silence: the silence that emerges after a train has passed through and is gone. It has a different quality of silence than a truck that rumbles through. Hmmm… good food for thought on all of this. In my not-so-silent coggin.  ;~)

Now that I’m really cogitating on this, there is the silence between thoughts, that very elusive silence in meditation that is a quiet joy to experience in its fleetingness too.    #11?

Need to stop here. Have a date with a certain mountain nearby. A silent one for all but the mystics.
